House of Love – Then & Now
From the very beginning of the House of Love project, a series of questions naturally began to surface, questions that have long fascinated me and that felt deeply connected to the people whose lives make up House of Love.
How do we look back on such a defining period of our lives? What are the first feelings that come to mind? The first memories? How do we see the person we once were, and the person we have become? How did choices that once seemed insignificant ultimately shape the course of our lives? How do we reinvent ourselves after such an intense experience? Where are they now? Have they become the people they once dreamed of being? Why do our relationships evolve the way they do? Why do the best things come to an end? And why is it that what makes them so extraordinary is precisely the fact that they do? In what ways do these experiences shape the people we become?
Ultimately, these questions resonate far beyond House of Love. They speak to many of us whose friendships were at the heart of our twenties.
These reflections gradually gave rise to the idea of a documentary. When the opportunity arose to present House of Love at the Manuel Rivera-Ortiz Foundation during the 2026 Rencontres d’Arles, that long-held idea naturally found the right moment to come to life.
When it came to choosing a director, Olivier Nicklaus was the obvious choice.
The intention was to give him carte blanche and invite him to bring his unique perspective as both a journalist and filmmaker. It was a choice that felt just as natural to the two women at the very origin of House of Love: Shelby Duncan and Sarai Fiszel
To borrow Sarai Fiszel’s expression, when I first met Olivier a few years ago, it felt like recognizing someone from my own tribe.
I deeply admire his talent, his emotional intelligence and his sensitivity. There is something about the way he sees people and the world around them that has always resonated deeply with me.
For the House of Love exhibition, he directed this short documentary, House of Love – Then & Now, featuring Shelby Duncan, Sarai Fiszel, Rebecca Zlotowski, Clementine Goldszal and Marc-Édouard Léon.
The documentary is on view at the Manuel Rivera-Ortiz Foundation throughout the 2026 Rencontres d’Arles. It is part of the House of Love exhibition, presented as part of the Come Together show.
